Help get Zelfire to Spain

I originally started skating in Pretoria and did my graduation bout in 2016 at the Joburg league, now called Golden City Rollers (GCR).

I’ve been with CTR since 2017, and have been on the management team for almost 6 years.

Covid brought our roller derby adventures to a complete stop and in an attempt to keep the league’s doors open I assisted my friend Rachel with “Learn to skate” classes during Covid, from October 2020. Some of our current skaters started their journey at these classes. CTR played a massive role in the increase of roller skaters and roller skating opportunities in Cape Town.

We managed to pull the league through Covid, with a handful of skaters, of which Rachel, NightFury and myself were the only senior skaters for a long while. We had to rebuild from scratch and I am thankful for each and everyone who played a role and stuck it out during the rebuilding phase.

This year we’ve entered a whole new chapter, and could finally play a Home Season again, with two teams of 10 players each!

It’s been a dream – to get more exposure and opportunities for CTR skaters, and thanks to Optimus Grime’s inviting us to Spain it’s become possible! CTR, just like GCR, is one of the most isolated derby leagues in the world.

We are all looking forward to learning as much as we can in Spain and bringing back the knowledge to coach and enrich and grow our league in Cape Town and hopefully make a positive impact on Roller Derby in SA.

We will be playing bouts (games) in Madrid & Malaga and we are thankful for Madrid Roller Derby & Las Judas for being willing to organise the games.

Some personal notes…

Roller Derby completely changed my life and me as a person.

It has empowered me greatly. I am able to take up space, appreciate my body, do incredibly hard things AND build muscles while having fun. As women, traditionally, we are expected to fit in specific moulds, to nod and smile and be “ordentlik”. Roller Derby expands and empowers and it is unapologetically loud!

Roller Derby and my Roller Derby friends have helped me through some of the most difficult times in my life. Divorce and thereafter & losing 3 people in a 2 month period, honestly almost broke me. But the love and support I got from my roller derby friends and what I get from this magical sport literally made me survive.

We’ve been working incredibly hard to make this happen, on and off track. Training hard + fundraising initiatives to pay towards our accommodation etc. If you are willing and able to make a contribution, it will be greatly appreciated. Even if it’s just a small contribution that we can use towards some snacks 🙂

I cannot wait to share this adventure with the Iron Meisies, some of the most incredible humans I know. I am proud of each one of us and also so proud of our league.

Please note that 25% of your contribution goes towards Cape Town Rollergirls’ costs for the Iron Meisies to get to Spain (accommodation, transport, etc), as well as processing fees.

The rest of the donation goes directly to the skater, towards whatever they need to get them and their skates to Spain.

Thank you so much for your support!
