We are aiming to raise R95 000 to get our travel team, the Iron Meisies, to Spain in October. Our goal is to cover all accommodation and transport costs while in Spain. If we raise any additional funds, this could go towards our team kit, possible further transport costs, as well as nutritious food to keep the team going.

We are a small WFTDA registered league based in Cape Town, South Africa – yes right on the tip of Africa! We are one of the most isolated leagues in the world and this will be our first international trip. We’ve only played bouts against our 2 local sister leagues, and they are between 1400 and 1600km away from us (that’s 869-994 miles). 

We will be playing games in Madrid and Malaga, and we are super thankful that Madrid Roller Derby and Las Judas in Malaga are willing to host us. We will be playing our first two WFTDA sanctioned games in Madrid! So nervous and excited!

Being a third world country our currency is very weak in comparison to the Euro. Recently our currency has been fluctuating between 18-21 South African rands (ZAR) for one Euro. It works out about the same for the U.S. dollar. For context, a Big Mac will cost you 1.5 Euro in South Africa!

Even more context – the majority of our skaters earn between 900-1500 Euro per month.

Okay okay, you get it! We do not have a lot of money. 

But we have been working REALLY hard to raise funds by hosting Roller Discos, teaching people how to skate as well as running competitions through our website and many more little things in the background continuously. We will also be taking some merch to sell in Spain, some of which are proudly handmade by our skaters, to raise additional funds. Having our skater profiles and a donation page for our league (this one you’re on right now) is another much needed avenue for raising the R95k we need. Any amount, no matter how small, would be appreciated. Everything absolutely helps us.

We are all looking forward to learning as much as we can in Spain and bringing ALL the knowledge back home to coach and enrich and grow our league in Cape Town, grow the skating community, and make a positive impact on Roller Derby in SA.

Cape Town is a beautiful place to visit, Google it now! We skate at a beautiful, safe venue in an area called Blouberg.
